Christmas Eve spree on Oxford Street

Every one agrees to say that it is so good to see the back of 2010. Annus Horribilis for so many, it was. A year that leaves behind a legacy of economic disasters, and most citizens seem to believe that 2011 will be a healthier year, if not an Annus Mirabilis (a wonderful year) - though last year’s flu epidemic still persists.
It hard to believe that 2011 could be wonderful when we begin the year  with an immediate hike in the cost of living, VAT going up to 20%, petrol likely to reach soon £1.40 per gallon, 1st Class Postage stamp goes up to 46p. Nurses pay will not only be frozen but will be reduced by an annual amount of £500. Season-tickets go up by 12% for commuters, clothing, furniture and drinks are all meant to bring more money to the coffers of the government. Increase in airport taxes will make air travel more expensive and will affect the tourism industry. The increase in university fees will be greatly felt by students. The banks are still reluctant to lend to businesses, and property market is at lowest ebb. Thousands will continue to be laid off as a result of the economic slump.
Well, still, there could be some wisdom in the thinking that 2011 should not be an Annus Miserabilis (Miserable Year), perhaps because of the hope that the situation cannot get any worse.
