A record of 21.3% of adult diabetes in 2009

According to a national inquiry on Non- Transmissible Disease conducted in 2009, 21.3% Mauritians between the age of 20 and 74 are suffering from diabetes.
This is what Minister of Health and Quality of Life, Mrs Maya Hanoomanjee said in Parliament on Tuesday 18 August 2010 to a question of a back bencher Member of Parliament, Hon Dayal.
Minister Hanoomanjee also said that there is a slight drop in the number of patients dying due to cardiovascular diseases, from 59% in 2007 to 56% in 2009.
The Minister of health said that 43.3% of the Mauritian population is suffering from obesity, particularly those between 25 and 74 yrs old.
Minister Hanoomanjee mentioned that her Ministry will introduce a project of a National Plan of Action for Nutrition 2009-2010 in order to control sales of food items in school canteen as per guide lines prepared by Nutrition Division of her Ministry.
