Following the death of the Vice President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Angidi Chettiar (82), all arrangements for the commemoration of the 110th birth anniversary of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) were cancelled.

Mr Chettiar’s cremation took place on September 18, date on which the SSR’s commemoration was to take place. Apart from a set of commemorative stamps no other event was organised.
Mr Chettiar himself was treasurer of the Mauritius Labour Party, a position that he occupied for decades as MP.
Born in South India he came to Mauritius at the age of 8. After academic studies, he entered his family’s textile retail trade which he helped to develop and expand.
He was a very faithful labourite.
