Olivier Bancoult, leader of the Chagos Refugee Group, went to the USA on the 5th October, 2009 to take his campaign to the administration of President Obama. He was accompanied by his lawyers.

In a statement made to the press shortly before he left for the USA Bancoult mentioned that this move was to make the administration of President Obama aware of the long sufferings of the chagossian community as a result of their deportation from the Chagos by the British Government from 1965 to 1971.

The British government subsequently leased the archipelago to the US who installed a military base on the main island of Diego Garcia.

“During our visit to the USA, there will be a working session with the Human Rights Watch, and in addition I will have the opportunity to participate in a conference at Washington” said Olivier Bancoult.
