Nicolas Ritter, spokesperson of Collectif Urgence Toxida (CUT), told participants at a three-day conference (20-22 October) in Port Louis that drug trafficking is the only economic section that is flourishing in Mauritius since the last forty years in spite of the courageous measures taken by the government.
He estimated that there were about 15,000 drug addicts in Mauritius who need two doses daily. «At Rs 200 a dose, the sum spent on drugs amount to Rs 6 million daily and to more than Rs 180 million monthly», Ritter said.
According to him, Mauritius is the second country in the world and second in Africa where there are so many drug addicts.
